Eugene Chang, MD, is a scientific co-founder of 32 Biosciences and a renowned expert in host-microbe interactions and gastrointestinal disease. He has made pivotal contributions to the GI field, including his role in the NIH Human Microbiome Project and establishing microbiome core facilities at the University of Chicago. As Director of the NIH P30 Digestive Disease Research Core Center for 25 years and the Microbiome Medicine program at the University of Chicago, Dr. Chang has shown outstanding leadership and strategic vision. His accolades include leadership roles in major gastroenterological associations, serving on the NIDDK Advisory Council, the title of Master of the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators, and numerous mentorship awards.

Using advanced methodologies to study interactions between the gut microbiota, immune system, and intestinal epithelium Dr. Chang studies the intestinal microbiome and its impact on human health and disease, the latter including disorders such as  inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic disorders, and gut homeostasis. He has mentored over 100 individuals, many now leaders in academia and industry, and authored landmark publications in gut microbiota and mucosal immunology. Supported by multiple NIH grants, Dr. Chang continues to drive innovation and improve health through research.
