Joseph Pierre, PhD, is a scientific co-founder of 32 Biosciences and an assistant professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Surgery at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Since joining the faculty in October 2021, Dr. Pierre has focused on nutrition research, particularly the role of dairy in promoting human health.
His position is supported by the Dairy Innovation Hub, which fosters innovation in health, agriculture, and sustainability.
Dr. Pierre’s research examines the relationship between the gut microbiome, nutrition, and intestinal physiology in health and disease. His lab utilizes diverse methods, including bariatric surgery and surgical nutrition models, gnotobiotics, organoids, and computational analysis of microbial communities. A key focus is investigating dairy components to enhance health, prevent disease, and inspire new therapies. His research aligns with the Wisconsin Idea, translating academic innovation into practical benefits for Wisconsin residents and the dairy industry. Dr. Pierre earned his PhD in Nutritional Sciences from UW–Madison in 2012 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago. Under Dr. Eugene Chang’s mentorship, he contributed to research foundational to 32 Biosciences.
